Satellite dish engineers for Colchester
Satellite TV depends on a small dish holding a very exact aim at a point in the sky far above the equator. When it’s right you barely think about it. When it drifts, even slightly, the picture starts to freeze in heavy showers, then on cloudy days, and finally the box reports no signal at all. A meter and a careful alignment put that right, and it is one of the jobs we do most often in Colchester.
We fit new Sky and Freesat dishes, move dishes for building work, replace LNBs, set up multi-room systems and install dishes for channels from abroad. We work right across the CO1 to CO4 postcodes and the villages around the city. If you are weighing up whether you still need a dish at all, we can help with that question too.

Sky dish installation
A Sky Q box needs a dish, and the LNB has to match how many tuners and boxes you run, so we check that first. Moving to Sky Glass or Sky Stream? Those use broadband with no dish at all, and your existing one can come down or stay up to feed a Freesat box.

Freesat installation
Live TV with no subscription and no monthly bill. Freesat is a good choice where a roof aerial struggles, for example on low ground near the river or behind tall trees, and it adds HD channels and on-demand apps through a Freesat box.

Dish realignment and LNB replacement
If the picture fails in rain, or one tuner works and another doesn’t, the dish may have moved or the LNB on the end of the arm may be failing. We realign with a meter and fit a new LNB if the old one is the cause.

Moving a dish
New extensions, loft conversions, rendering and solar panels often mean the dish has to come down. We find a new spot with a clear south-east view, run the cable neatly and seal where it enters the wall.

Multi-room and communal satellite
Multiswitch systems that feed several boxes in a large house, or every flat in a block, from a single dish. Useful in the city-centre apartment blocks and in shared houses near the university.

Foreign-language satellite
Dishes aimed at Hotbird and other European satellites for Italian, Polish, Greek, Turkish and other channels, often set alongside an existing Sky or Freesat dish where the wall allows.
Satellite repairs and ‘no signal’ messages
A box that reports it can’t find the satellite is nearly always pointing to a problem outdoors. A scaffolder’s pole or a gusty night can shift the dish, a hedge or sycamore can grow across its view between spring and autumn, and LNBs give out with age. Inside the house, a cable that has worked loose behind the box or a failed multiswitch shows the same message.
First, turn the box off at the socket for a minute, and look outside: snow on the dish or a cloudburst will clear by itself. If the warning comes back after that, ring us, and in most cases we trace and repair the fault on the first visit.

Where a dish can go in Colchester
A dish needs an open view to the south-east, so a north-facing wall or a garden under tall trees may not work. Most homes can have one without planning permission, but the rules are tighter in conservation areas, including the Colchester Town Centre Conservation Area and Lexden Village, and on listed buildings, especially on a wall or roof that faces the road. We will suggest a position that works and tell you if you should check with the council first.

Colchester questions
Why does my satellite picture cut out in heavy rain?
Rain and thick cloud weaken the signal a little. A dish aimed accurately has enough in reserve, so if yours fails in every shower it has probably drifted or the LNB is ageing. A realignment usually cures it.
I’m switching to Sky Glass. What happens to my dish?
Sky Glass streams over broadband, as does Sky Stream, so neither uses the dish. Sky Q does. If you no longer need it, we can take the dish down and fill the holes, or leave it in place to run Freesat in another room.
Can you move my dish before the builders start?
Yes. We take it down, store it or refit it in a new spot with a clear view south-east, then re-run the cable and realign it.
Do I need permission for a dish in the town centre conservation area?
The rules are stricter there and for listed buildings, especially for dishes facing the street. We can suggest a less visible position, and you should check with Colchester City Council if you are unsure.
Can I get channels from my home country?
That depends on which satellite carries them. Many Italian, Polish and Greek channels come from Hotbird, and a second dish for it can usually sit next to the one you already have.
