Satellite dishes in Ely
Big skies are a good start for satellite TV. Across most of Ely there is nothing tall to the south-east except the odd tree or neighbour’s roof, so finding a clear line to the satellites is usually easy. The harder part is keeping a dish there. Fenland gusts can twist a dish on a weak bracket, and a dish that moves even a fraction of a degree loses its margin, so the picture starts dropping in heavy rain.
We fit and repair Sky and Freesat dishes across Ely and its villages, align each one with a meter, and set it on a bracket that suits the wall and the exposure. We also replace LNBs, move dishes for building work, wire multi-room systems and fit dishes for channels from abroad. And if you are weighing up a move to TV over broadband, we can tell you what a dish still does that streaming doesn’t.
Satellite services in Ely

Sky dish installation
A Sky Q box, or any older Sky box, still takes its channels from a dish. We fit one with the right number of LNB outputs for the tuners in your house. Sky Glass and Sky Stream come over broadband instead, so a switch to either can leave a spare dish that we remove or reuse for Freesat.

Freesat installation
Subscription-free TV from the same satellites. It is a handy second option in Ely’s villages where an aerial signal is weak behind trees, and for annexes or garden rooms where you would rather not run an aerial cable.

Dish realignment and LNB replacement
Signal lost in every downpour, or one tuner failing while the other works? The dish has probably shifted or the LNB on the arm has failed. We realign on a meter and fit a new LNB when needed.

Moving a dish
Extensions, rendering, new windows and solar panels often mean the dish has to go somewhere else. We find a spot with a clear view south-east, remount it, re-run the cable and seal the entry hole.

Multi-room and communal satellite
Multiswitch systems so several boxes or several flats share one dish. Useful in larger family homes, converted buildings near the river and the newer apartment blocks around the city.

Foreign-language satellite
Dishes aimed at Hotbird and other European satellites for Polish, Italian, Portuguese, Greek and other channels, alongside a Sky or Freesat dish where there’s room.
Satellite repairs: ‘no satellite signal’
A ‘no satellite signal’ message in Ely usually has an outdoor cause. Gales push dishes out of line, trees and hedges grow into the view between spring and autumn, birds sit on the arm, and LNBs wear out. Indoors, a loose cable behind the box or a failed multiswitch gives the same message.
First, switch the box off at the wall for a minute and check that rain, snow or ice isn’t clogging the dish, as those clear by themselves. If the fault stays, we can usually find and fix it in a single visit.

Where can a dish go in Ely?
A dish needs a clear view to the south-east, so a wall facing that way, or a side wall with a clear corner, works best. Most homes can fit one without planning permission. The rules are tighter in a conservation area, and much of central Ely around the cathedral, Palace Green and the older streets lies within the Ely Conservation Area, designated in 1972. Listed buildings, of which the city has many, need extra care. We will suggest a position that keeps the dish out of sight from the street where possible, and tell you when it’s worth checking with East Cambridgeshire District Council first.

Ely questions
Why does my satellite picture break up when it rains in Ely?
Water in the air soaks up part of the signal on its way down from orbit. When a dish is set dead on target, there is enough in reserve to ride through a downpour. Losing the picture in ordinary showers means the dish has crept off line or the LNB is wearing out, and both are quick fixes.
Do I still need a dish for Sky?
Not with Sky Glass or Sky Stream, which use broadband. Sky Q and older Sky boxes still need a dish. If you’ve switched, the dish can stay and be used for Freesat.
Can you move my dish for an extension or new render?
Yes. We take it down, find a new position with a clear south-east view, re-run the cable and realign it with a meter.
Do I need permission for a dish in central Ely?
Usually not. Inside the Ely Conservation Area, or on a listed building, a dish on a wall or roof that faces the road may need consent. We’ll suggest a discreet position and tell you if you should ask the council.
Can I get channels from Poland or Italy?
Yes. We fit and align dishes to Hotbird and other satellites, and can often put one alongside your existing dish.
