Satellite TV in Leiston

For a lot of Leiston households a dish is the easiest route to a long channel list. Terrestrial TV here means either the Aldeburgh relay, with its limited line-up, or a distant main transmitter that needs a big aerial. A dish only asks for a patch of open south-eastern sky, and from most of the town that view runs out over the fields towards the coast. The skill lies in the fixing and the aim: a dish nudged a fraction by an easterly blow will hold up on a dry day and then fail in the first heavy shower.

Our satellite work covers new Sky and Freesat dishes, relocating a dish around extensions and roof repairs, swapping LNBs that have worn out, multi-room and shared systems, and dishes for programmes from other countries. We work across IP16, Sizewell and the parishes from Knodishall up to Yoxford. If you are weighing up whether you still need a dish, we will give you a straight answer.

What we do with satellite dishes

Sky dish installation

Sky Q still depends on a dish, and we choose an LNB with an output for each tuner you use. Sky Glass and Sky Stream are delivered through broadband, so after a switch to either the old dish can be removed or handed over to a Freesat box.

Freesat installation

Freesat costs nothing per month and brings a long list of channels, many in HD. Where the only aerial signal is the Aldeburgh relay, it fills the gaps that the relay leaves.

Dish realignment and LNB replacement

Dropouts during rain, or recordings that fail while live TV plays, tend to mean the dish has crept off aim or the LNB on the arm is failing. A meter reading shows which, and we correct it on the spot.

Moving a dish

External insulation, fresh render, new windows or a solar array can leave a dish in the way. We try alternative spots with the meter, pick the strongest, and run tidy new cable with a sealed entry.

Multi-room and communal satellite

A multiswitch shares one dish between many outlets, whether that is every bedroom in a big house or every flat in a block on the old Garrett works site.

Foreign-language satellite

Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Italian channels are among those carried on Hotbird and nearby satellites. A separate dish, or a dual-feed one, lets you watch them without losing Sky or Freesat.

Satellite faults and ‘no signal’ messages

Outdoor causes account for most satellite faults around Leiston. Gales coming in from the sea turn dishes on loose brackets, roofers and scaffolders bump them, a hedge or a neighbour’s tree climbs into the view over a few summers, and LNBs give up after years of damp. Inside the house, a coaxial plug pulled half out behind the box, or a dead multiswitch in a shared system, brings up the same screen.

Try a full restart first by turning the box off at the socket for a minute. Snow sitting in the dish, or a cloudburst overhead, also blocks the signal until it passes. If the message is still there on a clear dry day, ring us and we will usually have it fixed on the first visit.

Choosing where the dish goes

The dish must see the south-eastern sky without trees, chimneys or neighbouring roofs in the way, which rules out some north-facing walls and shady gardens. A typical house does not need planning permission for one. Consent is more likely to be needed in a conservation area, such as the Leiston Conservation Area around Main Street and the top of the High Street, or on a listed building, and especially where the dish would be seen from the road. We look for a spot that is both discreet and strong, and say when East Suffolk Council should be asked first.

Leiston questions

Is satellite a good option in Leiston?

Often, yes. The Aldeburgh relay offers only the main public service channels, and the full-service transmitters are far inland. Freesat through a dish with an open south-east view gives a long free channel list with no monthly bill.

Which Sky boxes need a dish?

Sky Q and older Sky boxes do. Sky Glass and Sky Stream do not, since they stream over broadband. A redundant Sky dish can be put to work feeding Freesat.

My dish loses the picture whenever it pours. Why?

Very heavy rain soaks up a little of the signal. An accurately aimed dish has spare strength to cope, so a dish that fails in each downpour has usually moved slightly or has an LNB on its way out. Both are quick fixes.

Can I put a dish on a house near Main Street?

Usually, but that part of town is a conservation area, so a dish facing the street may need consent. A rear wall or a lower roof at the back is often the answer, and we can suggest one.

Can you set up a dish for Polish or Lithuanian TV?

Yes. Many of those channels come from Hotbird, and we can fit a second dish or a dual-feed dish to receive them beside your current one.
