A camera earns its place in two ways. It puts people off before they try a door, and when something does happen it gives you a clear, dated recording of a face, a number plate or a van pulling away. Both depend on where each camera sits and how it is set up, which is why we start every job with a walk round the property.

Stanway has changed fast. What was a village on the old Roman road out of Colchester now has whole new neighbourhoods, from Lakelands to the Persimmon homes going up at Wyvern Farm, alongside the older roads round Villa Road, Stanway Green and Beacon End. It is also where west Colchester shops: Stane Retail Park, the restaurants on Stane Leisure Park and the Tollgate area all sit just off the Western Bypass, and trade counters and workshops fill Angora Business Park on Peartree Road. We fit and repair CCTV for all of them, and for the farms and village houses out towards Copford, Marks Tey and the Layers.

Camera types we fit

A tidy new-build frontage on Lakelands, a wide service yard on Peartree Road and a farm gate off a lane near Copford each suit a different camera, and one recorder can run a mix of them.

Turret
Our usual choice for homes: a wide view, strong night vision and no dome cover to catch glare.
Dome
Discreet and vandal-resistant, for ceilings, shop floors, porches and communal hallways.
Bullet
A visible deterrent with a longer reach, for driveways, yards and car parks.
Varifocal
Zoom set on the day to read a face at the door or a number plate at the gate.
PTZ
Pan, tilt and zoom cameras that can follow movement across a large yard or car park.
Number plate (ANPR)
Reads plates at entrances to business premises and private car parks.
AI detection
Alerts for people and vehicles only, not cats, passing cars or trees moving in the wind.
4G and solar
For gates, barns and building sites with no power or network cable to hand.

Everything records to a network video recorder (NVR) at your property, 4MP to 4K depending on the camera, with phone viewing included.

Picking the right cameras

On a modern Stanway estate, houses sit close together with parking bays to the side or in a shared court. That makes a turret camera with a fairly narrow view the better choice for the drive, because it records your car without filling the screen with next door’s. A video doorbell or a camera at head height catches visitors’ faces, which a camera high under the gutter often misses. For a unit with a long yard, a varifocal lens lets us zoom the picture in on the gate after it is mounted, and colour-at-night cameras help where security lights stay on through the evening.

Out in the countryside towards Marks Tey and the Roman river, a barn or field shelter may be a long way from the house. We can bridge the gap with a wireless link between buildings, or use a 4G camera running on solar where there is no cable at all. Before fitting, we show you each camera’s view on a tablet so you can agree it, and we size the recorder to hold several weeks of footage.

Your rough plan

3cameras

Recorder: 4-channel NVR

  • Front door: turret with a face-height view of the porch
  • Driveway: varifocal to catch number plates at the kerb
  • Back garden: wide-angle turret over the garden and back door

Most Stanway homes need three or four cameras. The free survey confirms the exact positions and gives you a fixed price.

CCTV faults we put right

Many of the systems we are asked to look at in Stanway were fitted with the house, or added a few years later, and the faults are familiar. A plug-in power supply fails and takes several cameras with it. Water gets into a joint left loose on the wall, so the picture rolls or drops out after rain. The recorder’s hard drive fills up or wears out and quietly stops saving. A spider builds across the lens and the infrared turns the night view into fog, or the infrared itself gives up. The most common of all: a broadband switch or new router, after which the phone app shows nothing.

We check every camera, cable and connection, swap the part that has failed and confirm recordings are being kept before we leave. If the old kit is past saving, we say so plainly and price a replacement that reuses good cable.

CCTV and the rules

Cameras looking only at your own house and garden are a private matter. On a close-packed estate, though, it is easy for a camera to take in a shared drive, the footpath or a neighbour’s windows, and footage of those places falls under data protection law. We angle cameras and mask out areas to keep that to a minimum. Businesses should put up clear CCTV signs and decide how long recordings are kept before being wiped. The Information Commissioner’s Office publishes plain guidance on home and business cameras, and we set your system up to fit with it.

Stanway questions

How much does CCTV cost in Stanway?

That depends on how many cameras you need, how far the cables run and the size of recorder. After a short survey, or a few questions by phone, we give you a fixed price.

Can I watch the cameras on my phone?

Yes. Live view and playback on your phone, tablet or computer come with every system, and we set the app up with you before we go.

Can you fix a system someone else fitted?

Yes. We work on most makes of camera and recorder, including kits fitted by housebuilders, and can usually upgrade analogue cameras to HD on the cable already there.

Do I need permission to put CCTV on my house?

You don’t need permission, but if a camera records beyond your boundary, data protection rules apply to that footage. We aim the cameras to avoid it as far as possible.

Does my business have to pay the ICO fee for CCTV?

Usually, yes. A business that uses cameras to prevent crime generally has to pay the Information Commissioner’s data protection fee, show signs and keep footage no longer than needed. Check the ICO website for the current fee and any exemptions.

I’ve just moved into a new build in Stanway. Can you add cameras without drilling all over it?

Yes. On new homes at places like Lakelands and Wyvern Farm we usually route cables through the loft and down inside the soffit, so you only see the camera itself. Talk to us before fitting if your warranty or management company has rules about the outside of the house.
