Satellite dishes in Saffron Walden
A dish has a far narrower view than an aerial. It looks at a satellite parked over the equator, and if the line between them is blocked by a tree, a neighbour’s extension or a chimney, or the dish creeps a fraction off target, the box loses its picture. In a town with as many mature gardens and tall old buildings as Saffron Walden, finding a clear line is half the job.
We put up new Sky and Freesat dishes, shift dishes for building work and re-roofing, swap failed LNBs and fit multi-room systems for houses, farms and flats across CB10 and CB11. If you’re unsure whether you still need a dish at all, we’ll talk it through honestly before you spend anything.
Satellite work in Saffron Walden

Sky dish installation
Dishes for Sky Q and older Sky boxes, with an LNB matched to how many boxes you run. Sky Glass and Sky Stream use broadband with no dish, so if you’re moving to one of those we can remove the old dish or leave it in place for Freesat.

Freesat installation
Live TV with no subscription. For cottages in the villages where the aerial signal is patchy, a Freesat dish is often the more dependable way to get the main channels in HD.

Dish realignment and LNB replacement
If the picture drops in every downpour, or one box loses signal while the others carry on, the dish has usually shifted or the LNB on the arm is failing. We realign with a meter and replace the LNB when it’s worn out.

Moving a dish
Extensions, new render, re-roofing and solar panels often mean a dish must move. We find a fresh spot with a clear south-easterly view, re-run the cable tidily and seal the entry into the house.

Multi-room and communal satellite
Multiswitch systems so several boxes in a big house, or several flats in a converted building, can share one dish without losing channels.

Foreign-language satellite
Dishes set to Hotbird and other European satellites for Italian, Polish, Greek and other channels, mounted beside your Sky or Freesat dish when there’s room.
When the box says ‘no satellite signal’
The cause is usually outside the house. Gales move dishes, roofers knock them, birds sit on the arm, trees in big town gardens grow into the dish’s line of sight over a summer, and LNBs wear out with age. Indoors, a cable pulled loose behind the box or a faulty multiswitch has the same effect.
First switch the box off at the wall and back on, and check heavy rain or snow isn’t covering the dish, as both clear up by themselves. If the message keeps returning, we can normally find and fix it on one visit.

Where a dish can go in Saffron Walden
The dish needs an open view to the south-east, so a north-facing front wall or a garden under big trees won’t do. Most houses don’t need planning permission for a dish, but the rules are tighter in a conservation area and for listed buildings, and much of the old centre of Saffron Walden falls within the town’s conservation area. There a dish facing the street is usually a problem, so we look first at rear walls, outbuildings or a pole in the garden, and we’ll tell you when to check with Uttlesford District Council before we fit.

Saffron Walden questions
Why does my satellite picture cut out in heavy rain?
Rain soaks up some of the signal. A well-aimed dish has enough margin to cope, so if yours fails in every shower it has probably drifted or the LNB is ageing. A realignment usually cures it.
Do I still need a dish for Sky?
Not with Sky Glass or Sky Stream, which run over broadband. Sky Q and older boxes still need a dish. If you’ve switched, the dish can stay and be used for Freesat.
Can a dish go on a listed building in Saffron Walden?
Sometimes, but it needs care and often consent. A rear wall, outbuilding or garden pole is usually better. Ask Uttlesford District Council before work on a listed building, and we’ll fit to what they agree.
Is Freesat a good option out in the villages?
Often, yes. Where the aerial signal is weak or unsteady, Freesat gives the main channels in HD with no monthly fee, as long as the dish has a clear view south-east.
Can you fit a dish for European channels?
Yes. We line up dishes on Hotbird and other satellites, often next to an existing Sky or Freesat dish.
